"INJUSTICE ANYWHERE IS A THREAT TO JUSTICE EVERYWHERE"

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR

The criminal justice system needs reform, and the time for change is now. Every individual deserves a second chance, and together, we can help make that possible. Whether you’re a concerned citizen, advocate, or someone passionate about creating a more just society, there are many ways you can get involved and make a difference.

Take Action

Join Us in the Fight for Criminal Justice Reform The criminal justice system is broken—and the time for change is now. In the United States, nearly 2 million individuals are incarcerated, and over 475,000 people are in pretrial detention as of 2024. These staggering numbers represent more than just individuals behind bars—they reflect a system that is failing to serve justice, and a system that disproportionately impacts communities of color, the poor, and vulnerable populations. The system is flawed, and it is critical that we demand change. At Remember My Prisoners, Inc., we believe every individual deserves a second chance. But we cannot do this alone. Together, we can help returning citizens overcome the insurmountable barriers they face, and we can advocate for systemic change that will ensure justice for all. Your involvement can make a real difference in the lives of millions. The time for change is now. Whether you’re an individual passionate about justice, an advocate pushing for real reform, or a funder committed to addressing mass incarceration, there are numerous ways you can contribute to this essential cause.

How You Can Get Involved

1. Advocate for Legislative Change

The need for reform is undeniable. With nearly 2 million people incarcerated and countless others affected by the criminal justice system, we must push for comprehensive reform that addresses the root causes of mass incarceration. We need you to help us demand the following changes: Ending mandatory minimum sentences Reforming parole and sentencing laws Eliminating the racial disparities in incarceration rates Focusing on rehabilitation and restorative justice, not punishment Your voice is powerful. Join our campaigns, speak out, and raise awareness to help pass laws that will create a fairer, more just system.

2. Support Returning Citizens Directly

Returning citizens face an uphill battle as they work to rebuild their lives after incarceration. The challenges they face—finding stable housing, securing employment, accessing mental health care—are daunting. Yet we know that with the right support, they can thrive. Here’s how you can help: Donate to fund reentry services: Your contribution ensures returning citizens have access to the resources they need, such as housing assistance, job training, and mental health services. Volunteer your time or expertise: Whether you can offer legal assistance, career counseling, or mentorship, your time will make a meaningful impact on someone’s journey toward reintegration. Host or participate in fundraising events: Help us raise the critical funds needed to provide services that break the cycle of incarceration.

3. Engage in Public Education and Outreach

The numbers tell the story, but understanding the human impact of mass incarceration is key to inspiring action. Join us in educating the public about the true cost of mass incarceration. You can make a difference by: Attending workshops or training sessions to better understand the challenges of reentry and the need for reform. Sharing your story or becoming an advocate for returning citizens and those currently incarcerated. By amplifying the voices of those affected, we can inspire others to get involved and take action.

4. Advocate for Fairer Hiring Practices

One of the most significant barriers returning citizens face is securing stable employment. Your support can change that. Advocate for companies that are willing to give returning citizens a second chance. Here’s how: Support businesses that hire returning citizens. Help them build a fairer, more inclusive workforce. Encourage businesses to adopt fair hiring practices and consider partnering with organizations that support returning citizens. For Funders: Your Support is Vital The need for reform is urgent, and your support can help us create lasting change. With nearly 2 million people incarcerated in the United States, the stakes have never been higher. But we are not helpless in the face of these staggering numbers—we have the tools to create meaningful reform and support those impacted by the criminal justice system.

Raise awareness and drive advocacy that will fuel systemic change and encourage lawmakers to prioritize criminal justice reform. As a funder, your investment is an investment in a more just society. The Challenges Within U.S. Federal Prisons and the Road to Reform In recent years, several federal prisons in the United States have faced serious scrutiny due to incidents of violence, staff misconduct, and safety concerns. These issues are not just isolated cases but part of a broader systemic problem that affects the rehabilitation of incarcerated individuals and the safety of both inmates and staff. Key Issues in Federal Prisons Violence and Overcrowding Prisons like the United States Penitentiary in Beaumont, Texas, have seen violent altercations, resulting in multiple inmate deaths. Gang-related conflicts, overcrowding, and limited oversight continue to fuel unsafe conditions, contributing to high recidivism rates among former inmates (Wikipedia, CBS News). Staff Misconduct: Reports of staff involvement in criminal activities, including drug smuggling and abuse of inmates, are alarmingly frequent. A Senate investigation revealed that female inmates in federal facilities have been sexually abused by staff in at least two-thirds of these institutions over the past decade (CBS News). Inmate Safety and Deaths: Between 2014 and 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice investigated over 340 inmate deaths across federal prisons. The lack of proper care, violent incidents, and inadequate safety measures continue to jeopardize the well-being of incarcerated individuals, hindering their rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society (Department of Justice OIG). How These Issues Impact Returning Citizens When individuals leave these institutions and reenter society, they carry with them the scars of a broken system. The lack of meaningful rehabilitation, exposure to violence, and inadequate support during reentry significantly increases the likelihood of recidivism. At Remember My Prisoners, Inc., we believe that true justice involves not just punishment but rehabilitation and reintegration. The challenges faced within federal prisons highlight the urgent need for reform in both the way we incarcerate individuals and the resources provided to those reentering society.
